『格上の日本語力』（齋藤孝著 中公新書ラフレ）を読みました。
その中にこの文章がありました。

国境の長いトンネルを抜けると雪国であった。
夜の底が白くなった。
信号所が汽車が止まった。
向側の座席から娘が立って来て、島村の前のガラス窓を落とした。
雪の冷気が流れ込んだ。娘は窓いっぱいに乗り出して、遠くへ叫ぶように、
「駅長さあん、駅長さあん。」
明かりをさげてゆっくり雪を踏んで来た男は、襟巻で鼻の上まで包み、
耳に帽子の毛皮を垂れていた。
もうそんな寒さかと、島村は外を眺めると、
鉄道の官舎らしいバラックが山裾に寒々と散らばっているだけで、
雪の色はそこまでいかぬうちに闇に呑まれていた。

これはいうでもなく、『雪国』（川端康成著）の冒頭の文章です。
とても洗練された美しい文章ですね。
その後に、これがありました。

The train came out of the long tunnel into the snow county.
The earth lay white under the night sky. The train pulled up at a signal stop.

The station master walked slowly over the snow, a lantern in his hand.
His face was buried to the nose in a muffler,
and the flaps of his cap were turned down over the ears.
It’s that cold is it, thought Shimamura.
Low barracklike building that might have been railway dormitories
were scattered here and there up the frozen slope of the mountain.
The white of the snow fell away into the darkness
some distance before it reached them.

このような表現が、ネットに載っていました。

日本語は情景の描写に長けており、
よい文章は場面の雰囲気を相違なく目の前に浮かべてくれます。
決して長い文章ではなく余分な言葉を使わずに、
きれいにまとめるのが日本語の文化です。

このふたつを読み比べてみると、まさにその通りだなと感じました。
遠い昔に読んだと思われる『雪国』ですが、
今回図書館で借りて読んでみることにしました。
写真に意味はありませんが、
リンクしてシェアしたときに、写真があった方が見栄えがいいので、
散歩中に撮った写真を適当に貼っています。
